The Sunshine Coast Council, working in partnership with the Australian company Geospatial Intelligence, is keen to explore the potential for creating a Centre of Excellence in Geospatial Technology on the Sunshine Coast. The centre will work with local, national and international organisations to apply geospatial solutions to complex problems.
The unique ability for the Centre of Excellence to access geospatial data in near-real-time means quicker and more effective decision making across all challenges for local, national and international customers.
The Sunshine Coast is home to an 18 Tbps submarine data cable providing the fastest east coast connection from Australia to Asia.

Geospatial intelligence (or geo-int) can help us solve many of the world’s most challenging problems, from managing and preventing disasters such as fires and floods through to reducing environmental degradation, enhancing food production and improving transport flows and urban planning.
It uses a combination of technologies including satellite imaging, geographic information systems, Ai, data analytics and modelling technologies to help us better understand the world around us.
The possibilities for Geospatial intelligence were the topic of an ideation session held in Maroochydore on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in October 2023. The session brought together numerous local and national specialists from the commercial, academic and public sectors to discuss the idea of creating a Geospatial Intelligence Centre of Excellence in the region. Facilitated by tech expert and author Brad Howarth, the session examined the potential of geoscience, the business and social benefits it unlocks and the actions needed to create a vibrant technology community. It was both a learning and discussion forum and Sunshine Coast Council was keen to hear from all participants about their ambitions and requirements in this area.
Geospatial intelligence has the potential to solve many of Australia’s greatest challenges and create new social and commercial opportunities. It also provides an opportunity to be a driver of new employment and investment opportunities for Australia’s Sunshine Coast.
Sunshine Coast Council is keen to understand where different organisations see benefits in participating in the development of a regional geoscience capability and also to map out what different parties can contribute to its formation.
