Construction productivity has not been keeping pace with other industries. Inefficiencies, delays and cost overruns are now a persistent challenge across the sector.
Despite the challenges, technology adoption has been slow, in part because of industry fragmentation and also because of limited opportunities to test and adopt new innovations at scale.
The Sunshine Coast is uniquely positioned to lead change. Construction is one of the region’s largest industries and employers, supported by major development activity, advanced digital connectivity, data centre infrastructure and a highly collaborative innovation ecosystem.
Sunshine Coast Council successfully delivered Hard Hats, High Tech in Paradise — an exclusive Construction Tech Ideation Session that brought together industry leaders, technology innovators and key stakeholders to explore new opportunities and drive productivity across the construction sector.
Building on the success of previous Council-led ideation initiatives — including the Geospatial Intelligence Ideation Session, which helped spark programs such as the UniSC Space to Sea Accelerator Program — the session demonstrated how Council’s Tech in Paradise initiative continues to turn innovation into action.
The event highlighted the growing role of emerging technologies in solving construction industry challenges, accelerating adoption and supporting smarter, more efficient ways of building.
Participants contributed to shaping a Sunshine Coast-led intelligent construction ecosystem focused on improving productivity, reducing cost and risk, and positioning the region at the forefront of construction innovation in Australia.
The first Construction Tech Ideation Session was a great success. Key note speakers included Georgina North, Head of Robotics, Automation and Data, McNab and Jacob Lee, Founder & Director, AECT Solutions.

Sunshine Coast Council is keen to understand where different organisations see value in contributing to the development of a regional Construction Tech ecosystem and to identify how industry, technology, research and government stakeholders can support its growth and implementation.
It’s not too late! Register your interest to participate in the development of a Construction Tech ecosystem in the region by completing this quick form. A member of Sunshine Coast Council’s project team will be in touch.
