Founded in 2018 by Brad Chesham, a nurse with experience across Australia, the UK and conflict zones like Afghanistan and Iraq, Bundle of Rays was created to bridge critical gaps in healthcare training. Brad saw first-hand how traditional methods often fell short in preparing professionals for real-world, high-risk scenarios. His solution? A VR-based platform that allows trainees to practice life-saving procedures in a controlled, risk-free setting.
Participation in Sunshine Coast Council’s Testing Tech in Paradise (TTiP) program enabled Bundle of Rays to fast-track the development of new products by “testing tech in a real world environment”. TTiP provided Brad and his team with access to cutting-edge digital infrastructure in Sunshine Coast’s Maroochydore City Centre, allowing them to accelerate and refine product development, and unlock new market opportunities both in Australia and globally.
At the heart of Bundle of Rays is their VR/AR platform, designed to be scalable and cover a wide range of crucial healthcare areas including Acute Care, Mental Health, Critical Care and even Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
But this isn’t just a fancy tech demo – the technology developed by Bundle of Rays allows trainees to:
Bundle of Rays delivers a nationally accredited Basic Life Support (BLS) program in partnership with Aspen Medical – a major milestone in bringing immersive education into certified training pathways.
During the disruptive times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bundle of Rays stepped up to provide immersive, VR-based training for Advanced Life Support (ALS) and PALS scenarios. Although these modules are not yet certified, they allow learners to safely practice and build confidence in life-saving procedures.
Importantly, Bundle of Rays’ education platform is not limited to clinical settings.
Their VR/AR modules are designed for use across multiple sectors – from ergonomics training in warehouse and industrial environments, to advanced simulations for hospital-based teams. This flexibility reflects the true versatility of their training solutions.
Bundle of Rays is a wonderful home-grown story for the Sunshine Coast and have gained some serious traction, with clients including Queensland Health, Ohio State University in the USA and South Korea’s Taegu Science University.
Their innovative approach caught the eye of the South Korean government, leading to their selection for the prestigious K-Startup Grand Challenge in 2022. This accelerator program is designed to help promising global startups, like our Sunny Coast heroes, to expand into the Asian market.
Boasting a 300% year-on-year growth rate, Bundle of Rays is now operating across Australia, the US, UK, Brazil and South Korea.
Bundle of Rays continues to lead the way in immersive tech innovation with several advanced features, including:
The Sunshine Coast has played a key role in Bundle of Rays’ success. From the former local innovation initiative, SunRamp Healthtech Accelerator, to the latest the Testing Tech in Paradise program, Bundle of Rays received mentorship and access to global investor connections.
These unique programs and initiatives enable innovative companies to trial their technology using world-class digital infrastructure.
Through TTiP, Bundle of Rays leveraged WiFi 6 and low-latency networks to conduct real-time VR/AR simulations, demonstrating how their platform could connect healthcare learners all around the world.
“Testing Tech in Paradise gave us the opportunity to explore, test and showcase our immersive training capabilities with international markets right from the Sunshine Coast,” said founder Brad Chesham.
“Having access to high-speed, reliable infrastructure made it possible for us to push the limits of spatial computing and AI-powered training, which was a game-changer for our development,” he added.
Brad also highlights some very practical advantages of being based in the region.
According to Brad, the former SunRamp Accelerator training offered authentic, ongoing mentorship, as well as branding and promotion which allowed him to connect meaningfully with other innovators and investors.
“Additionally, the Sunshine Coast Airport provides easy national access, while proximity to Brisbane International Airport makes global business travel straightforward,” he said.
Brad describes being based on the Sunshine Coast as “seamless” for a company with international clients. He also mentions another strength of the region – the people and talent.
According to Brad, the Sunshine Coast has seen an influx of highly skilled professionals, particularly from Sydney and Melbourne, who bring fresh perspectives, specialised knowledge and a willingness to collaborate. This growing talent pool adds significant value for local tech start-ups looking to scale.
Meanwhile, the region’s strong health sector, anchored by the Sunshine Coast Health Precinct, continues to support innovation in medical research and digital health solutions – making it a natural fit for Bundle of Rays’ ambitions.
The Sunshine Coast’s investment in next-generation infrastructure, such as international submarine cables and WiFi 6 networks, has further positioned the region as a prime location for healthtech companies to innovate, test and scale.
And with the global digital health market expected to grow from $96 billion in 2022 to $221 billion by 2026, Bundle of Rays is well-positioned to capitalise on the rising demand for VR-based training.
As telehealth and digital learning solutions continue to evolve, the company’s ability to merge real-world clinical expertise with advanced technology makes it a leader in the field.
The future is bright for Bundle of Rays. Its journey shows that combining frontline nursing insight with cutting‑edge VR can transform how clinicians learn – making training safer, more scalable and infinitely more engaging. And it all started right here on the Sunshine Coast.
Looking ahead, Bundle of Rays is poised to capitalise on major export market opportunities. The company is in discussions around a significant potential order from Sri Lanka and is actively expanding its presence in offshore markets .
Participation in the TTiP program will help expedite Bundle of Rays’ export strategy, positioning the company for further connections across the Asia Pacific region, including Fiji, thanks to additional digital infrastructure such as the Google Tabua cable that will link the Sunshine Coast directly to Pacific markets.
With its continued global expansion and unwavering commitment to innovation, Bundle of Rays isn’t just changing medical education – it’s reshaping how clinicians learn, train and tackle high‑stakes scenarios.
