Contribution to the economy
The Sunshine Coast is transforming its public transport network with The Wave, a major infrastructure initiative set to support a growing community, encourage sustainable travel and boost opportunities ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Key features include a Beerwah–Birtinya rail connection and a rapid bus corridor linking Maroochydore City Centre and the Sunshine Coast Airport. High-capacity, frequent services will ensure reliable, seamless journeys across the region.
What is it?
The Wave is a mass transit public transport system designed to move large numbers of people along fixed routes or networks and is a key consideration for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It includes:
- Heavy passenger rail (The Wave Stages 1 and 2)
- High-capacity, high-frequency metro service (The Wave Stage 3)
By 2041, by shifting people to sustainable transport, we hope to achieve:
- 830,000 less cars on our roads each day
- Prevent lost productivity from traffic congestion costing up to $3billion a year (currently estimated at $500m per year)
- Significantly improve our liveability and natural environment
