Under its Smart City Framework, Sunshine Coast Council is deploying a range of innovative technologies to deliver social and economic benefits for the region.

As part of this work, Council has been building an Open Access Telecommunications Network that can be shared by multiple carriers to provide improved services and bolster businesses with world class connectivity to Australia and the world.

The network is a critical component that enables carriers and private networks to deliver customised, point-to-point services via domestic and international connections, including the Sunshine Coast International Broadband Network, the fastest east coast connection between Australia and Asia.

Advanced telecommunications for a growing region.

Sunshine Coast Council acquired its own carrier licence in 2016 as part of its long term Smart City Framework. The licence enabled Council to build and manage a telecommunications network that supports today’s needs and tomorrow’s opportunities, resulting in increased competition and reduced connectivity costs.

Today, four major carriers are actively using the network and supporting its ongoing development, making the region a tech-friendly environment for businesses of all sizes. As the network continues to expand, businesses gain access to even more choices, better services, and competitive pricing.

Future-focused development.

Council’s proactive approach to building the underground telecommunications network ensures future-ready developments. The network boasts:

  • 72km of telecommunications conduits
  • 941 telecommunications pits
  • 93km of optic fibre.

By integrating telecommunications infrastructure into capital works projects and urban developments, Council is ensuring that future upgrades can happen with minimal disruption.

This reduces the need to constantly dig up footpaths and public spaces, and provides the physical and wireless connections for future technologies to be added quickly and more cost effectively.

A network purpose-built for business and people.

Multi-path connectivity for business continuity.
Businesses need more than just one connection to stay competitive—they need multi-path diversity. The Sunshine Coast’s dedicated optic fibre network ensures access to multiple broadband paths, reducing the risk of service interruptions.

This diversity is critical for high-value, data-driven companies that require reliable, always-on connectivity. It allows businesses to connect to their preferred internet provider and provides peace of mind that operations will continue smoothly even during outages.

Built to scale and grow with businesses.
The network’s infrastructure grows with developments across the region, ensuring digital capacity never becomes a bottleneck. Whether scaling up or expanding into new markets, the region’s flexible network ensures that businesses can increase their bandwidth as they grow. This reliability helps businesses avoid service disruptions, providing peace of mind for management and IT teams alike.

World class infrastructure that enables innovation.

Innovation hub for forward-thinking companies.
The Sunshine Coast’s digital infrastructure is a key reason why companies like Genpact and Maropost have established operations in the region. The Maroochydore City Centre is a prime example of how cutting-edge digital infrastructure supports business growth and innovation. The Testing Tech in Paradise initiative, combined with ultra-fast connectivity, provides an ideal environment for businesses to test emerging technologies.

Raising the standard for digital infrastructure.
Council’s investment in digital infrastructure sets a new standard for cities across Australia. By building smart technologies into the region’s developments, the Sunshine Coast is positioning itself as a leader in digital innovation that supports both economic growth and improved quality of life.

Innovative suite of investment services.
